SCIENCE FICTION HAUTE COUTURE

Fashion designed by Iris van Herpen takes you to another galaxy. Her futuristic creations in 3D printing are breathtaking.

As a guest-member of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture in Paris, Iris van Herpen presented her new haute couture collection entitled Hybrid Holism on July 2, 2012. The new creations are highly complex and incredibly diverse in terms of shape, structure and materials. She used mirrored copper sheeting, metallic coated stripes, UV-curable Polymer, silicone lace, Swarovski crystals, acrylic transparent sheets and Eco leather.

The Dutch designer uses Mammoth Stereo lithography, a technique involving 3D printing, built slice by slice from bottom to top, in a vessel of polymer that hardens when struck by a laser beam.

Van Herpen’s design is a work of art. Her models look like living sculptures in a future universe. Her 3D printed dresses were named as one of the 50 Best Inventions of 2011 by TIME Magazine.
