Maya Hansen is one of my favourite fashion designers. The beautiful Spaniard specialized in corsets, but recently had a great success with her magnificent prints – a tribute to Mexican culture and art.
In February 2013, she presented her spring/summer 2013 collection at Fashion Week Madrid. It was her ninth collection and her third fashion show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.
“Women who wear my clothes have got a strong personality,” says Maya. “They are feminine, elegant and sexy, and they’ve got a mysterious dark side.”
When she was a fashion student, she was not interested in corsetry. One day, she tried on a corset in a store and immediately fell in love with it.
The new spring/summer 2013 collection is inspired by Mexico and the Mayan Culture. The colourful collection features corsets as well as skirts, dresses, blouses and bodysuits with beautiful prints of the Lady of Guadalupe (the patron saint of Mexico), flowers and skulls, as well as tropical prints with flamingos, cocktails and watermelons. The Spanish designer combines elements of Mexico’s flora and fauna with mystic elements of the Mayan culture. One pink leather minidress is inspired by Mexican wrestling.
Futuristic metal corsets are also part of Maya Hansen’s new collection. Maya worked closely with a metal master to create them. “It was very difficult to make those corsets, for we combined metal and textile,” she says.
