Georges Hobeika is an extremely talented haute couture fashion designer from Beirut. He creates glamorous, ethereal dresses that require hundreds of hours of embroidery and weaving.
I had the honour to attend his haute couture fashion show in Paris, which took place at the hotel Le Meurice on January 21, 2013. The show was spectacular. The couturier unveiled sophisticated, elegant and refined looks fit for a princess. His looks are adapted to 21st-century modernism and can be worn not only on the red carpet, but also to dinner and cocktail parties.
His new collection is entitled Peace Blossom. Fairylike models floated down the runway in the Salle Pompadour in Cinderella-like dresses. According to the couturier, “the Georges Hobeika woman travels from the four corners of the globe to Paris spreading a message of peace illuminated by the promise of hope. Inspiring the world to seek goodness above all else, she brings the gift of a rare blossom symbolizing love, kindness, tolerance and compassion.”
Fresh and soft hues of blue, pink, white and grey, uniquely complimented by invigorating shades of green and fuchsia, voice her emotion. Striking silhouettes in crepe georgette and organza embody the character of her soul, displaying its treasures as delicate Swarovski crystals, beautiful custom sequins and precious pearls.
Lebanese designers who have ateliers and showrooms in Beirut and Paris are riding on a wave of success: Elie Saab, Zuhair Murad, Georges Hobeika and Georges Chakra are the favourites of the red-carpet habitués from Hollywood to the Gulf. They opt for classical lines and glamorous dresses in tulle, chiffon and lace. Swarovski crystals add sparkle to many of the outfits.
What I love about the George Hobeika style is the fact that his creations combine grace, femininity, sensuality and glamour. They are never theatrical or provocative. Unlike other designers, who present 80 looks at a fashion show, Georges Hobeika limits himself to 35 looks. Each one of them is unique and different. There are no copies. In my opinion, a quote of Yves Saint Laurent applies to Georges Hobeika: “I am no longer concerned with sensation and innovation, but with the perfection of my style.”
