I had the great honour to attend Elie Saab’s haute couture fashion show in Paris on July 3, 2013. The press text had announced ‘A Royal Affair”, and indeed, the collection was of royal splendor.
Royally opulent silhouettes appeared from between the columns of the Palais Brongniart, with a stature befitting the most majestic and prestigious of ceremonies.
A beautiful blood-red, akin to rubies plucked from a crown, dominated the first looks. Red used to be the distinctive colour of queens and kings. Veins of carmine sequins highlighted the waist, shining like rivulets of colored diamonds.
Dresses and trains were embroidered with gem-colored crystals, evoking a fiery set of jewels: emerald green, ruby red and sapphire blue. I particularly liked the amazing dresses in écru and silver with crystalline reflections.
Gowns revealed backs that had been cut into the pear and oval shapes of jewels. A décolleté that curves elegantly like the break of a swan was set with rows of beading, running analogous to a waistline underscored with glittering stones. To contrast, silhouettes appeared with an asymmetric neckline, or were bowed and draped in silk chiffon.
The bridal gown was simply spectacular. The model looked like a princess of 1001 Nights. She emerged with her three bridesmaids, wearing a gown embroidered with repeated linear constellations of smoked quartz, crystal and waves of silvery moondust.
