Byzantine opulence and imperial splendour dominated Elie Saab’s new haute couture collection for fall/winter 2012/13. The Lebanese designer titled his show, which was held in Paris on July 4, 2012 In Constantinople’s Wake.
The new collection is breathtaking. Sumptuous evening gowns made for modern princesses. Elie Saab opened his show with a caftan shape in embroidered black tulle. The silhouette looked novel for him (it reminded me a little bit of Valentino), but he mostly stuck to his Oscar-winning formula of red-carpet evening gowns.
Ethereal, ample volumes in silk organza with swathes of gold find a counterpart in raw lace edges on sleeves and skirts; tulle, guipure and lace create layers of transparency.
The collection embraces a palette of champagne to smoky grey, soft pink, peacock or sky blue, antiqued gold and jade.
